This is characteristic of NumPy's eager expression evaluation. NumPy processes these operations left-to-right, and the moment it spies a valid operation like a*b, it goes ahead and performs it. A hypothetical 'lazy' evaluation would wait until it reached the end of the line, observe that the expression included multiple operations, and try to perform them all together - but this would be a much more complicated endeavor, and it's not NumPy's approach.
